Climate Justice in the City: Mapping Heat-Related Risk for Climate Change Mitigation of the Urban and Peri-Urban Area of Padua (Italy)

The mitigation of urban heat islands (UHIs) is crucial for promoting the sustainable development areas. Geographic information systems (GISs) together with satellite-derived data are powerful tools investigating spatiotemporal distribution UHIs. Depending on availability and geographic scale analysis, different methodologies can be adopted. Here, we show a complete open source GIS-based methodology based satellite-driven mapping impact UHI heat-related elderly risk (HERI) in Functional Urban Area Padua. Thermal anomalies territory were mapped by modelling satellite from Sentinel-3. After socio-demographic HERI was according to five levels risk. highest vulnerability localised within area three municipalities near Padua, which represent about 20% entire investigated. In these municipalities, percentage people over 20%, thermal anomaly 2.4 °C, 0.65 found. Based outputs, it possible define nature-based solutions reducing phenomenon promote cities. Stakeholders use results investigations climate environmental policies.
